Craig Newmark Philanthropies Supports Journalism on how Global Crises affect the United States with funding for Coda Media
January 13, 2022 — Coda Media announces a $50,000 gift from Craig Newmark Philanthropies to expand its coverage of topics of global importance including disinformation campaigns, technologies that erode trust and facilitate surveillance, and rising tide of anti-science sentiment. This generous donation will be used to support a senior reporter based in the United States, also funded by the Reva & David Logan Foundation, and to nurture impactful journalism across national borders.
With the renewal of crucial support from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Coda is able to examine how these trends are shaping public discourse and impacting communities in the U.S. and how decisions made from Washington, D.C. to Silicon Valley affect the rest of the world.
“Coda’s focus is on the storylines that most define our current era — disinformation campaigns, the undermining of expertise and shared historical understanding, the rise of anti-science movements and the emergence of mass tools of surveillance,” said Ilan Greenberg, Publisher and Editorial Director of Coda. “Craig Newmark’s sustained support comes at a time of mounting concerns over the issues Coda covers. I am deeply grateful to Craig Newmark Philanthropies for enhancing our capacity to report on these topics for our large U.S. readership as well as our international audience.”
Through this grant, Coda’s U.S. stories will marry revelatory reporting with vivid narrative writing and locate important stories lurking within Coda’s coverage topics.
Today, more than ever, the world needs journalism that disrupts the noise of the 24-hour news cycle, does not abandon stories and puts them in context. Thanks to this gift from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Coda Story will be able to continue this work.
