Georgia moves to adopt a constitutional definition of heterosexual marriage

The government of Georgia wants to change the country’s constitution to specify that marriage is a union between men and women. A spontaneous movement for this constitutional change was first born last year in reaction to the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. Now the Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has announced a campaign for the constitutional change. The move is a big blow to defenders of LGBTQ rights, and to the country’s pro-Western politicians. It’s parliamentary election year in socially conservative Georgia and the move, which is likely to be popular, will be a difficult one for the opposition to handle. “It’s damaging to Georgian democracy, but protesting it will be hugely unpopular,” one opposition politician told Coda Story.
